Scatter Light
An artist residency & Exhibition at christie’s
First Exposures Young Artist Residency cultivates the next generation of photographers and artists. Spanning six months, the residency gives young artists an invaluable opportunity to develop a personal, photography-based project.
This residency began with a question: what light has found you and where do you want it to reach?
In physics, the scattering of light is what makes light visible through color. It’s responsible for effects like the blue color of the sky and the visible beams of light in fog or dust. In photography, we bring light into the lens to illuminate the traces of life that exist because light found them.
This year, with the guidance of Artist, Rebeca Abidaíl Flores, the residents explored the light found in the warm moments shared between family. In this exhibition, the memories that linger become part of a shared history. The artists share their linages, their stories, and their homes.
Spend time sitting with Connie’s grandfather, or laugh alongside Fio’s group of friends. Watch Sophia’s grandmother get married, and witness Ty’s family grow.
How beautiful it is to recognize that we can move forward and plant a seed here, in the present, and giving it the light it needs to grow.
